Teaching school children about human rights
A new area of educational activity for the Legal Initiative NGO is teaching schoolchildren about human rights. Educating this group requires special attention and professionalism from the organization's trainers. Each session with schoolchildren involves an in-depth exploration of a specific topic, carefully adapted to the needs and characteristics of the participants. The interactive nature of the lessons helps children absorb the material easily and develop critical thinking skills.
Preventive self-defense programs
Since 1996, Legal Initiative has been implementing "Citizen and Investigation: Legal and Psychological Aspects", and since 2007, the "Citizen and Law Enforcement" program. These initiatives aim to enhance psychological resilience and legal awareness when interacting with security forces.
The goal of these programs is to educate participants on the basics of criminal and administrative law, legal psychology, and proper behavior in such situations. Experts explain citizens' rights, procedural document completion, and self-defense methods. They also provide training on legal psychology in interactions with law enforcement and teach self-protection strategies within the criminal and administrative justice systems.
These programs are designed for a broad audience and are beneficial for every citizen.
Migration and human rights
Legal Initiative supports Belarusians forced to leave their country due to political persecution or other threats. We provide consultations on migration issues, security abroad, and protection against discrimination, as well as assistance in obtaining international or humanitarian protection status.
Our lawyers help in cases involving the risk of deportation, extradition, or detention at the request of Belarusian authorities. We guide individuals on protecting their rights, prepare necessary documents confirming persecution risks, and connect them with attorneys or relevant organizations.
As part of our educational efforts, we explain key aspects of migration law:
-
What is international search, and how does the regime use it? We clarify how the international search system works, how Belarus exploits it to persecute citizens, and the risks involved.
-
How do individuals end up on international wanted lists? We outline the mechanisms, procedures, and criteria for being placed under an international search.
-
Differences and specifics of international search systems. We explain the distinctions between various search systems and their use for political purposes.
-
How to protect yourself from risks. We provide practical recommendations on minimizing threats for those targeted by search lists.
-
Steps to take if detained under a Belarusian extradition request. We give a detailed breakdown of rights and necessary actions for protection.
-
Extradition detention as a preventive measure. We explain what extradition detention entails and the rights detainees retain.
-
Double criminality principle. We analyze how differences in national laws can affect extradition requests.
-
The role of the Belarusian embassy in extradition cases. We discuss how Belarusian embassies may interfere in extradition processes and how to counteract it.
-
How to get help? We assist in protecting your rights, preparing documentation to prove political persecution, liaising with migration authorities, and providing legal arguments demonstrating the dangers of returning to Belarus.
